Engagement Sessions in Washington, D.C.

Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St SE, Washington, DC 20540
ArchitecturalEditorialFormal

Best Time of Year: Year-round, since the session is indoors; early April adds cherry blossoms elsewhere in the city

Ideal For: Couples who want grand interior architecture and are happy to plan around a permit

The Thomas Jefferson Building gives you something the rest of the city cannot: a grand session that happens entirely indoors. The Great Hall rises two storeys in marble, with mosaic floors, gold leaf, arched balconies and a stained glass ceiling overhead, and its paired staircases give a photographer real height to work from. Detail is everywhere, so the frames range from full architectural width down to close texture without moving far. It is federal property with genuine rules, though, and formal photography here is permitted rather than assumed. That makes this a session to arrange well in advance, and one where the paperwork matters as much as the light.

Why Shoot Here

  • Two storeys of marble, mosaic floor and gold leaf
  • A stained glass ceiling over the Great Hall
  • Paired staircases and arched balconies to shoot from
  • Entirely indoors, so the weather is never a factor
  • On Capitol Hill, steps from the Capitol and the Mall
  • An interior with no real equivalent in the city

Session Tips

  • Formal photography needs a pre-approved permit, and engagement sessions count
  • The permit is required whether or not your photographer is being paid
  • Apply early: approval takes time and is not guaranteed
  • The Main Reading Room is not generally open for photography
  • Tripods and lighting need permission beyond an ordinary visit
  • Entry uses free timed-entry passes, so the pass and the permit are separate steps

Getting There

The Jefferson Building stands on First Street SE on Capitol Hill, directly east of the Capitol, with Capitol South and Union Station the nearest Metro stops and very little useful street parking nearby. Two things have to be in place before the day: a timed-entry pass to get in, and a pre-approved permit for the photography itself. Your photographer handles the permit application and confirms the meeting point once your session is booked.

From the very beginning Jeff along with his studio manager Frankie were both very good at communicating and chose the most beautiful place, Huntington Beach State Park.
