Couples FAQ
Your questions, answered.
Everything worth knowing about working with Focal Weddings to find and book your wedding photographer: what it costs, how the process works, and who is behind the recommendations. If your question isn't here, we're one message away.
The basics
What do we have to pay for your service?
Nothing. Focal Weddings is free for couples. We're paid a commission by the photographer when you book, so there's no cost to you at any stage, from the first conversation to the signed contract.
That also keeps our incentive straightforward: we're paid only when you book a photographer you're genuinely happy with, so we have no reason to recommend anyone but the right fit.
Are you a photographer?
No. We're not a studio competing for your booking. Focal Weddings is a free matchmaking and planning service that helps you find and book the right photographer for your wedding.
We work as your photography concierge. We know the industry, we know the photographers, and we represent your interests throughout. Because we're independent, we're free to recommend whoever genuinely suits you best.
Why should we trust you?
We've spent years working on the photographers' side of the industry, building the tools and businesses that wedding photographers rely on. That gives us a genuine understanding of how the market works, along with established relationships with the people in it.
We vet every photographer we recommend, manage the back-and-forth on your behalf, and stay involved from the first call through to the signed contract. And because couples pay us nothing, we have no reason to steer you toward the wrong person.
How it works
What is the process?
Straightforward, and mostly hands-off for you. Here's how it works, from first conversation to signed contract:
- 1.We start with a discovery call to understand your date, location, budget, and the style you have in mind.
- 2.We search for photographers who fit your plans, budget, and vision. Availability is the starting point, not the deciding factor. We look for someone whose work matches the gallery you want and whose approach fits how you want the day to feel.
- 3.We send you recommendations and keep refining until one feels right. There's no limit on how many we'll suggest, and no pressure to choose.
- 4.Once you've chosen, we help you work out the coverage your day actually needs, build a custom package with the photographer, and negotiate exclusive offers for your engagement session and wedding.
- 5.We send clear quotes and walk you through the booking process, answering every question along the way.
- 6.We brief your photographer on the details of your wedding, so they understand your day and you never have to explain it twice.
- 7.Once everything is signed, we introduce you to your photographer directly and you're booked in with them.
How many photographers will you recommend?
As many as it takes. We usually open with a small, hand-picked selection of photographers who genuinely fit your brief, then refine from there based on your feedback. A focused shortlist is more useful to you than an overwhelming one.
What photography styles can you match us with?
Any of them. Style is central to how we match, whether you're drawn to documentary, editorial, fine-art film, dark and dramatic, or light and airy.
We recommend photographers whose portfolio already reflects the look you want, rather than asking someone to work outside their strengths.
Are we obligated to book anyone?
No. There's no fee and no commitment at any point. You move forward only when you've found a photographer you're genuinely excited about, and if nothing feels right, you're free to step away.
The photographers
Where do the photographers come from, and what's your relationship with them?
Many are photographers we've worked with closely for years and can vouch for personally. If none of them suit your day, we approach others on your behalf, review their work and professionalism, and brief them on how we work.
You're never limited to our existing roster. The goal is the best match for you, not the most convenient one for us.
Pricing, logistics & coverage
How much does a wedding photographer cost?
It varies widely. Location, experience, hours of coverage, and what's included in the package all affect the price. Whatever your budget, we focus on photographers who work within it.
If you'd like a sense of typical pricing before we talk, our guides break down what couples generally spend.
Do we get an engagement session?
Often, yes. When we build your custom package, a complimentary or discounted engagement session is one of the first things we negotiate for you, along with other exclusive savings.
We can't guarantee it on every package, since it depends on the photographer and the coverage you book, but it's always something we ask for on your behalf.
Do you help with videography too, or just photography?
Yes. Many of the photographers we work with also offer videography or hybrid photo and video coverage. If you have something specific in mind, such as Super 8, drone footage, or a particular editing style, we can source videographers who specialize in it.
What else can you help us with?
Photography is our focus, but we can help with much of the rest of your planning, and introduce you to vendors we already trust.
Vendors we can introduce you to:
- Venues
- Florists
- Decor and rentals
- DJs
- Officiants
Planning we can help with:
- Building your wedding day timeline
- Setting your photography budget
- Navigating city hall and courthouse permits
Not sure what you need yet? We can talk you through the options and help you decide what fits your budget and your day:
- Whether photography, videography, or both suits your day
- How many hours of coverage you actually need
- Which photography or videography style fits your vision
- Whether to include an engagement session
- Whether a wedding album is worth adding
What areas do you cover?
We match couples with photographers across a growing number of cities and regions, and we're expanding continually. The quickest way to check your area is to get in touch. We'll tell you straight away whether we can help.
How far in advance should we start looking?
The earlier the better. The most in-demand photographers are often booked 12 to 18 months ahead, particularly for peak-season dates. That said, it's rarely too late to ask, and we've matched couples on much shorter timelines.
Still have a question?
Tell us about your wedding and what you're looking for. Someone from our team will get back to you personally, with no pressure and no obligation.
