The National Gallery gives you three completely different sessions inside one building complex. The West Building opens into a domed rotunda ringed in dark marble columns with a fountain at its centre, and the garden courts either side drop soft daylight through glass roofs onto real plantings — the closest thing in Washington to shooting outdoors while staying inside. Below ground, the concourse linking the two buildings runs through Leo Villareal's Multiverse, a passage of moving LED light that looks like nothing else in the city. Then I. M. Pei's East Building answers all of it in hard angular concrete and glass. It is free to enter and genuinely busy, and it restricts portrait photography, so this is a session to clear in advance rather than turn up to.

Session Tips
- Portrait photography needs the Gallery's permission, so clear it well before the day
- Tripods and lighting are restricted, and special exhibitions are often off limits entirely
- The garden courts hold soft daylight all day, so they are the safest bet for even light
- The Multiverse tunnel is dim and moving — expect a slow shutter and several attempts
- Weekday mornings are quietest; the rotunda fills quickly at weekends
- The West and East Buildings are two different looks, and the concourse links them without going outside
Getting There
The Gallery sits on the north side of the National Mall between Third and Seventh Streets NW, with Archives–Navy Memorial and Judiciary Square the closest Metro stops and street parking along Constitution Avenue hard to count on. Entry is free, and because the West and East Buildings connect underground the whole session can run without stepping outside. The Gallery restricts portrait photography, so your photographer arranges permission and confirms the meeting point once your session is booked.
