Oatlands Historic House and Gardens

Engagement Sessions in Washington, D.C.

20850 Oatlands Plantation Lane, Leesburg, VA 20175
Formal gardenHistoric estateBoxwoodTerracedLoudoun CountyGolden hour

Best Time of Year: Late April into June, when the garden is fullest. Early autumn is quieter and still green. The garden is at its thinnest in winter.

Ideal For: Couples who want a formal garden and period architecture rather than open landscape, and who are happy to book and pay a site fee in advance.

Oatlands sits on Loudoun County countryside five miles south of Leesburg, and the part you photograph is concentrated: a four acre English terraced garden falling away from an early 1800s mansion, hedged in boxwood two centuries old. Each level of the terracing sits at a different height, so one frame holds foreground, middle distance and depth, and past the hedges the land opens into Virginia horse country. Founded in 1798 as a plantation and a site of enslavement, Oatlands interprets that history openly, so read their account first.

Why Shoot Here

  • A four acre English terraced garden dropping in levels away from the house
  • Boxwood hedges and allees with two centuries of growth behind them
  • A restored propagation greenhouse from about 1810, the oldest in the country
  • Early 1800s brick dependencies grouped around the mansion
  • The columned front of the house, with its restored balustrade and Victorian fence
  • A walled section of the garden that reads as enclosed and private
  • Open Loudoun County farmland beyond the garden walls
  • Mature specimen trees across the lawns

Session Tips

  • Book with Oatlands before your session. The site charges a fee for professional photography, and a photographer who shoots there often may hold a season pass.
  • The walk from the Carriage House visitor parking up to the mansion is about a quarter mile round trip, with an incline and uneven ground.
  • The gardens are tiered and linked by steps. Choose footwear you can manage stairs and gravel in, and allow time to move between levels.
  • Late light comes in low over the farmland west of the garden, which is the hour most photographers will want.
  • The garden changes a great deal by season. Ask to see work shot in your month rather than at peak bloom.
  • Check the events calendar. The site hosts weddings and public programmes that can close parts of the grounds.
  • Confirm what your booking covers. Access to the garden and grounds is not the same as access inside the mansion.

Getting There

Oatlands is in Loudoun County, directly off Route 15, the James Monroe Highway, about five miles south of Leesburg and roughly an hour from central Washington without traffic. Enter at the main entrance on Route 15 and follow the lane to the parking area beside the Carriage House. From there it is a short uphill walk to the mansion and gardens. Because photography here is arranged and paid for in advance, your photographer will normally handle that with the site and confirm your meeting point once the session is booked.

From the very beginning Jeff along with his studio manager Frankie were both very good at communicating and chose the most beautiful place, Huntington Beach State Park.
